Five-Ply Laminate Construction and Materials
The integrity of our graphite seals stems from their robust construction. Each seal is manufactured as a five-ply laminate (Alloy / Graphite / Alloy / Graphite / Alloy).
This sandwich construction ensures mechanical strength while maintaining the flexibility required for torque-seated sealing.
We offer two primary material configurations to suit varied chemical and environmental demands:
- 1mm Inconel® alloy 625
- 1.2mm Monel® alloy 400
These metal layers are paired with 1mm SGL Carbon Grade Z Graphite, which boasts a 99.85% purity level, ensuring minimal impurities and maximum sealing performance.

Technical Specifications and Temperature Ratings
Richard Miles graphite seals are designed to perform where standard sealing materials fail.
Our seals are rated for service from cryogenic temperatures up to +450°C (+842°F). This wide operational envelope makes them suitable for everything from LNG applications to high-pressure steam systems.
Standard sizing ranges from 2 inches (50mm) to 24 inches (600mm). However, as a specialist manufacturer, we regularly consider special sizes and bespoke dimensions upon request to meet unique project requirements.
Every seal is supplied with full batch traceability, which is laser etched onto the outermost metal layer for permanent identification.

Precision Machining and Triple Offset Geometry
Our graphite seals leverage triple offset geometry to eliminate the friction and wear typically found in concentric or double offset valves.
By rotating the centreline of the cone away from the valve centreline, we achieve an ellipsoidal profile that allows the seal to engage the seat only at the final point of closure.
All graphite TOSV seals are supplied fully machined to customer-provided drawings. Our facility is capable of producing both round and elliptical outside circumferences with extreme precision.
Every component is validated via a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) before dispatch, ensuring that the finished seal matches your engineering specifications exactly.
